It’s a wire-free, weather-resistant model (IP66) that shoots sharp 2K video, supports Alexa and Google, and works with plenty of other smart devices through IFTTT. The flexibility starts at installation—you can run it off the rechargeable battery or hook it into your existing doorbell wiring for always-on power and 24/7 recording. Battery life is rated for up to eight months, though heavy use (e.g., constant motion detection) will bring that number down.
The 180-degree field of view of the D225 means you can see head-to-toe, whether it’s a delivery person holding a package or an unannounced visitor. The built-in PIR motion sensor picks up people, pets, vehicles, and packages, with alerts you can tailor so you’re not bombarded by every passing car. Local storage is an option if you add your own microSD card (up to 512GB), while cloud storage through Tapo Care starts at $3.49 a month (with a free trial of one month). Either way, you’ll get motion-triggered recordings and access to live streaming from the camera, with two-way audio for talking to whoever's at your door.
Daytime footage is crisp, according to this PCMag review, with vibrant colors and good detail across the wide frame. Night vision comes in two flavors: black-and-white infrared, which is sharp, and a color mode that uses the built-in LED ring as a spotlight. The color version works, though it’s not as punchy as daylight video. The app makes two-way audio simple without having to hold down a button, and there’s a Quick Response feature for playing prerecorded messages if you can’t answer live. On the downside, there’s no Apple HomeKit support, and you’ll need to buy your own SD card if you want local recording without a subscription. But for well under $100, the Tapo D225 covers the basics, and a bit more, at a price that’s hard to argue with.
